Q Welcome to Adolescent Literature 2221 003 Dear Class, Sorry for the lateness of this letter. In these first weeks, I will be sharing a focus for discussion in your letters. The topic, or theme, for this “voice.” In this week’s letter, in no less than three paragraphs, I would like for you to discuss the writer’s voice and chose ONE of the following: ? The writer’s voice in this context is tricky: how would you describe Charlie’s voice as the writer and how does he achieve that voice. What verbal choices does he make? This question also includes some writer’s craft: How does Chbosky make Charlie sound like Charlie? A complicated question. ? Why do you think that Stephen Chbosky wrote Charlie’s story through a series of letters? ? Does the letter writer’s voice change over time? Use evidence from the start of the novel to where you have read to provide evidence for your interpretation. ? Is Charlie a reliable narrator? Is he as “innocent” as he projects or does he really know how to manipulate his friends? Here is our procedure: ? The path of the letters: o Person 1 will launch and write to Person 2. o Person 2 must include a summary of what Person 1 said and add their own ideas and forward the letter to Person 3. o Person 3 must include ideas summarized from Person 2 and so on and forward letter back to Person 1. o You will have to correspond with your partners to schedule your letters. For instance, Person 1 agrees to forward letter to Person 2 on Sunday and Person 2 agrees to forward letter to Person 3 on Tuesday. o If you need emails for your fellow students you have a way to look them up but if you can’t find it, please contact me and I will help you. ? I would like to discuss Charlie's voice in the novel Perks of Being a Wallflower. As we have come to see, the novel is written in the form of a series of letters written by Charlie to an unknown friend, who never happens to read them. We, as readers of Charlie's diary, are the primary audience to the story. Charlie's voice hence a letter not to an unknown friend but an unbiased third person within us. Through the use of letters, the book portrays Charlie as the writer of the novel and not Stephen Chbosky. The voice that is provided to the author here is of a child, as the protagonist speaks to his friend with child-like innocence, unlike others.
